Talk:Pivot-oM Diskless Root Image Creation
is it necessary to install python and portage?

Nopes... but would be nice if the mini distro used the Gentoo tools... although space will be an issue as more software is needed yet... Ima also unsure of the size of the install... not done it yet from a mounted loop file... I do know that it might help using mount --bind while building (things like /tmp n stuff to stop the file system gettin too full)

Notes
http://www.mail-archive.com/gentoo-embedded@lists.gentoo.org/msg00130.html
it's worth checking out uClibc instead of glibc, 'cos it's a tad smaller
http://dev.gentoo.org/~iggy/uclibc/gentoo-uclibc-HOWTO
also, for embedded systems there's busybox to replace common utilities like ls and stuff (emerge with USE="make-symlinks netboot") and baselayout has been pared down to make the "baselayout-lite" package
and, there's a very small cross compile howto at http://dev.gentoo.org/~vapier/CROSS-COMPILE-HOWTO .
